Domaine Georges Lignier

Georges Lignier owns some of the greatest vineyards in and around the village of Morey-Saint-Denis including Clos de la Roche, Bonne Mares and Clos St. Denis for which the Domaine is known for owning the largest plot .  In contrast to the powerful and intense style of Hubert Lignier, the wines of Georges Lignier focuses on Pinot Noir's elegant, delicate, subtle and seductive qualities.

The domaine is currently by Georges Lignier's nephew Benoit Stehly, who has been fully in charge of the winemaking since 2008. His approach to winemaking is very traditional, with particular emphasis on aromatic concentration, elegance and above all, balance.  The vines of the estate average around 50 years old which gives the grapes their intensity and natural concentration. Harvesting here is also slightly later to give more ripeness and to give greater aromatic complexity, Benoit uses a small percentage (about 20% maximum) of stems when the bunches are sufficiently lignified.

Benoit relies on having a very cold cellar to prolong his fermentations to allow for a very slow and gentle extraction of flavors and colours. The use of new oak is well controlled at this address with the village level wines getting only older barrels and about 30% new for the 1er Crus see 30%, and up to 50% for the Grand Crus.  The wines are neither fined nor filtered before bottling. The resulting wines are elegant, sensual and seductive on the nose and elegant, refined tannins with fresh balance and structure in the mouth. The wines have been very well rated by Jancis Robinson with practically every bottle getting scores ranging from 17 - 18.5 points
